Thomas F. Stemen, age 80, left to be with his lord on Sunday, July 8, 2018, peacefully at home. Tom was born on December 16, 1937 to the late Clyde F. Stemen and Catherine F. (Ruth) Stemen. He was preceded in death by his sister Mary C. Smith.

Thomas is survived by his two nieces Leslie Smith (Michael) Becker of Sunnyvale, CA and Chris Smith (Joe) Clabes of Lexington, KY. He had four grand nieces and nephews: Andrew, Allison, Lauren and Tyler.

Thomas graduated from Shawnee High School in the class of 1955. He worked at Buckeye Pipeline Co., Ohio State Library and Superior Coach before joining the U. S. Army in January 1960. After training in Ft. Knox, KY and a brief assignment in DeWitt Military Hospital at Alexandria, Virginia, he was assigned to the 9th engineer battalion (combat) as officer’s clerk in Aschaffenburg, Germany for two years. During his time in Germany, he traveled all over Europe as far as Greece.

After being honorably discharged from the Army in December 1962, Tom returned to Superior Coach before becoming a manpower scheduling specialist at the Lima Refinery in 1967, then known as Sohio and later British Petroleum. He retired after 27 years on Jan. 1, 1995. During his tenure, Tom wrote personal interest articles for BP’s “Busy People” newsletter and was asked to research and chronicle the Lima Refinery’s 125 year history dating back to the original Solar Plant through each successive owner of the refinery.

Thomas was known to be very knowledgeable on numerous subjects particularly about history, travel, art and antiques. He had a great sense of humor and was always ready for a laugh. He was an avid reader of biographies and histories. He was particularly interested in genealogy making him the family historian. He was a member of the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. He will be most remembered for his devotion to his family and for being a loyal son, who took wonderful care of his mother.
