Ruth Evelyn Thomas Freed, 82, was called into the presence of the Lord, at 10:54 a.m. Saturday, May 30, 2015, in her home, surrounded by her family.

Ruth was born December 19, 1932 in Lima to the late Harley and Goldie Whetstone Thomas. On August 25, 1956 she married the love of her life, Larry D. Freed, who survives in Elida. They were married 58 wonderful years.

Mrs. Freed taught in the Lima City Schools for 34 years. She received her B.S. in Education from Olivet Nazarene University, Kankakee, Illinois in 1955 and her M.S. in Counseling from the University of Dayton in 1974. She also attended Ohio Northern University.

Ruth is a retired life member of the NEA and OEA and the Retired Teachers Association of Allen County. She is a member of the Lima Community Church of the Nazarene. Ruth was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She loved her grandchildren. She loved to go camping, travel, work in the garden, and play games with her grandchildren. She will be greatly missed.

She was blessed with three children, Sherry Ann Freed, who preceded her in death, Michael L. Kathleen Freed of Lima, and Timothy W. Laura Freed of Elida; and a nephew, whom she raised, Craig A. Thomas of Mendon; five grandchildren, John Freed, Andrew Freed, Nathan Freed, Stacey Freed, and Alexander Freed.

Other survivors include a brother, Lynn Barbara Thomas of Harrod; and sister-in-law, Marge Thomas of Lima.

She is preceded in death by three sisters, Lenore Thomas, Martha Jane Prine, and Betty Lou Boothby; and four brothers, Franklin Thomas, Ernest J. Thomas, Darrell Thomas, and Walter Thomas.

Services will begin 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 3, 2015 at CHILES – LAMAN FUNERAL AND CREMATION SERVICES, SHAWNEE CHAPEL. Pastor Doug Boquist will officiate. Burial will follow the services in St. Matthews Cemetery.

Friends may call 2:00 – 4:00 and 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Monday, June 1, at the funeral home and 2:00 – 4:00 and 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 2, and one hour prior to the funeral on Wednesday, June 3.
