Russel “Russ” Eugene Gossman, age 87, was called into the presence of the Lord at 7:08 am on Thursday, May 24, 2018 at his home in Lima.
Russel was born August 18, 1930 in Jenera, Ohio to the late Clifford and Altha (Stark) Gossman. On September 11, 1948 he married the love of his life, Nola Eileen (Condon) Gossman who preceeded him death on March 1, 2016. They were married 67 wonderful years.
Russ was a 1948 graduate of LaFayette – Jackson High School. During his lifetime, Russ attended classes at the Northwestern College of Ohio, International Correspondence School, The Ohio State University, Wayne State University, Madonna College, Eastern Michigan University. In 1985, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree from the Central Michigan University.
Over his career, Russ worked for Renz’ Bakery, Neon Products, Lima Locomotive Works, BLH Corporation, Clark Equipment Company and retired, in 1994, from the UAW International Solidarity House in Detroit, Michigan. In 1993, he was honored as the Grand Marshal of the Lima Labor Day Parade for his lifetime advocacy of labor equality.
Russ’ community involvement included serving as President of the UAW Local 106, President of the LaFayette – Jackson Board of Education, Precinct Delegate for the Michigan Democratic Party (Woodhaven, Michigan), and a UAW International Representative for the Solidarity House in Detroit, Michigan. An advocate for environmental concerns, Russ served on the Michigan Air Pollution Control Commission, Hazardous Waste Management Planning Commission, and the Governor’s Council on Environmental Quality. Russ also served on the Board of Trustees for Lima Technical College, Allen East School District Board, Allen County Democratic Party Executive Committee, Lima AFL Regional Council, Lima Allied Labor Council, Great Lakes Medal of Honor Advisory Committee, Earthworks Advisory Board for WKBD Fox 50 TV in Detroit and many other community boards and committees. Russ coached for Allen East Schools boys basketball and girls softball programs in his early years. He also served as a mentor to “at risk” students at Hosmer Elementary School in Detroit, Michigan.
Russ was an avid Detroit Tigers, Detroit Red Wings and Lima Loco’s fan. He loved to travel, enjoyed reading and spending time with his devoted wife, Nola. Russ was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, LaFayette.
Nola and Russ were blessed with 3 children, Michael E. (Virginia L. “Ginny”) Gossman, of Lima, Judith A. “Judy” (Pete E.) Hubbell, of Lima and Kelly B. Gossman, of Ada; 6 grandchildren, Cori (Jeff) Smith, of Lima, Jodi (Bob) Swallow, of Lima, Kris (Megan) Gossman, of Brownstown, MI, Jeff (Melissa) Gossman, of Fostoria, Erick Gossman, of Lima, Kayla (Daniel) Shaw, of Lima; 7 great-grandchildren, Sydney, Keeley, Riley, Morgan, Owen, Andrew and Abbi.
Other survivors include, 2 brothers, Ken (Bev) Gossman, of Arlington and Gary (Judy) Gossman, of Columbus Grove; 2 sisters, Treva (Denny) Tremain of Arkansas, Glenda (Jim) Marshall of Lima; 4 sisters-in law, Sandy Gossman, Carol Cotterman, Anna Condon, Joan Condon, and special family friend, Sharon A. McClintock.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Ron Gossman; a sister, LaDonna Haskell; 2 brothers-in law, Jack Condon and Jim Condon; and a sister-in law, Nadine (Harold) Stark.
Funeral services will begin at 10:30 am on Tuesday, May 29, 2018 at Zion Lutheran Church, 101 East Main Street, LaFayette, Ohio 45854. Reverend Robin Ramos will officiate the services. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Friends may call from 2:00-8:00 pm on Sunday, May 27, 2018 at the CHILES – LAMAN FUNERAL AND CREMATION SERVICES, EASTSIDE CHAPEL and one hour prior to the funeral at the church.
