Rowland “Wayne” D. Deal, 85, of Lima, passed away at 1:39 PM on Wednesday, July 18, 2018 at Lima Memorial Hospital.

He was born on January 26, 1933 in Rockford, OH, to Thomas C. and Myrtle M. (Sutton) Deal, who both preceded him in death. On November 23, 1951, he married Delores “Jean” Guisinger, who preceded him in death on July 16, 2016.

Rowland started his career with the B & O Railroad as a brakeman. He left to serve his country as a member of the US Navy during the Korean War. After returning from his tour of duty, he got involved with the railroad as a Union member and eventually became a local Union Chairman. As time progressed he became a lobbyist for the United Transportation Union at the Capital in Columbus, OH and often traveled to the United States Capital in Washington D.C. He eventually became the Chairman of the Board of the United Transportation Union of the Ohio Legislative Safety Board in Columbus, OH. During his time in Columbus he was honored by both Governors of Ohio, James A. Rhodes and Richard Celeste. Under Governor Rhodes term, he appointed Rowland to the Ohio Rail Transportation Authority. Also during his time there he was named a Kentucky Colonel, Who’s Who In Society in 1986 and was a final candidate to be the Chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board, which he declined to accept.

On February 13, 1992 the 119th General Assembly of the State of Ohio adopted H.Con.R.No.38 Resolution congratulating Rowland on his retirement and salute him as one of Ohio’s finest citizens. After retirement he enjoyed traveling with his wife to their winter home in Florida. In the early and mid 1960’s, he was a Bath Township Constable and a Bath Township Firefighter. He also ran for Bath Township Trustee and served many terms. He was named an Honorary Member of the Bath Township Firefighters after he left.

He was a member of the Living Water Fellowship Church, Lima as well as the Lima Lodge #205 F. & A.M.
Surviving are his two sons Jerry (Vickie) Deal of Zanesfield, OH and Mike (Katie) Deal of Lakeview, OH; his six grandchildren; his ten great-grandchildren; his son-in-law Roy Marvin of Columbus, OH; Wayne and Jean’s great friend of over 70 years Rosie Hauenstein.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Gloria Jalene Marvin; his brothers Bobby “Bob”, Carl and Rex Deal.

The family will receive friends from 12:00 Noon until 2:00 PM on Monday, July 23, 2018 at CHILES-LAMAN FUNERAL & CREMATION SERVICES, EASTSIDE CHAPEL.

Masonic services will be conducted by Lima Lodge #205 at 1:45 PM Monday, immediately followed by funeral services at 2:00 PM, with Rev. Paul M. Holbrook officiating.

Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Ada, where military honors will be conducted by VFW Post #1275 and active duty members of the US Navy.
