Robert N. “Bob” Oden, 91, passed away Thursday, May 17, 2018 at Elmcroft of Lima.

Born August 10, 1926 in Murfreesboro, Tennessee to Robert Nathan and Allyne (Parsons) Oden, “Nathan Jr.,” as he was known then, enjoyed a Tom Sawyer childhood until they moved to Lima in 1940. He attended Lima’s South and Central high schools until senior year when he was drafted to serve in World War II Japan. After the War, he returned to Central to complete his schooling and met the girl of his dreams, Jean Osman. They graduated in 1947 and married in 1949. Bob and Jean were blessed with 68 years of marriage.

Besides Jean, Bob is survived by two sons, Michael Oden of Lima, Sean (Kay) Oden of Lima, and one daughter, Pamela (Scott Whitlock) Oden of Chicago. He was the proud grandfather of granddaughters Miranda (Todd Fowler) Oden, Melissa (Todd) Sherrick, and Samantha Whitlock; and five great-grandchildren, Kelsey, Kyler (Breanne Novinger), and Carter Oden, and Keegan and Brody Sherrick.

He was preceded in death by daughter-in-law Patricia “Patty” Oden and infant grandson John Carl Oden.

Bob’s long work history includes Underwood Typewriters, Greyhound, and Northrup King Seeds. In 1998 he retired from his final career as an officer at the Lima Correctional Institute. In later years, when asked what he did before retiring, he enjoyed the reaction he got by responding, “I was in prison for 22 years.” At work, Bob was known for his fair and respectful treatment of others, co-workers and inmates alike.

Bob had unshakable integrity and faith, and a strong sense of duty; he was a good man. He wanted nothing more in life than to be with his family and take care of his wife, kids and parents. He excelled at this. As a husband he did everything possible to make his wife Jean feel loved and protected. As a son, he made sure both sets of parents were safe, sound and included in all the great times the family had touring every free attraction in Ohio. As a dad he was happy playing catch, fixing bikes or turning Ewing Avenue into a badminton court. All kids welcome. He always had dogs and cats, and was a loving, gentle master.

Bob was a St. Marks Church member for over fifty years. He was also a retired Sergeant Major from the Army Reserve. He will be remembered with lots of love and laughter.
