Richard O. “Dick” Norton, age 96 of Lima, passed away Monday, June 12, 2023, at 9:13 a.m. at Kessler Estates.

He was born October 28, 1926 in Battle Creek, MI, to John and Margaret (O’Brien) Norton who preceded him in death. On Feb. 23, 1952, he married Doris M. Gerdemann who preceded him in death on May 5, 1983. He then married on May 4, 1985, Louise Malloy who preceded him in death on May 14, 1999.

Surviving are his children: Kathleen (John “Mick”) Sherrick, Terrence (Jody) Norton and Patty (Tony) Golding all of Lima, John “Jack” (Dana) Norton of Liberty, MO, and Richard “Dick” (Ginger) Norton of Lima. He is also survived by his 17 grandchildren, whom he loved: Lisa (Gary) Davisson, Scott (Jamie) Sherrick, Christopher (Melissa) Sherrick, Paige (Chris) Fay, Patrick (Rachel) Norton, Andrew (Allie) Norton, Zachery (Lauren) Norton, Bryan (Kayla) Golding, Jenny (Mark) Scherer, Allison (Todd) Helline, Troy (Ashley) Golding, Joe ((Britty Hale) Norton, Matthew (Allison) Norton, Lucas (Carlyn) Norton, Angela (Kris) Wagner, Amy (Andy) Hefner and Anthony (Lindsay) Norton; and his 35 great-grandchildren whom he loved just as much: Nathan, Justin and Anna Davisson, Kaitlyn, Michael and Corbin Sherrick, Cadence and Alexis Rowe, Hunter and Jackson Sherrick, Addison, Emily, Liam, Gabrielle and Kilian Fay, Savannah and Cecelia Norton, Claire and Olivia Norton, Wyatt Golding, Logan, Ava and Quinnlyn Scherer, Brinley, Josie and Zadie Helline, Brooks and Asher Golding, Anders Norton, Ella, Emma and Ethan Wagner, Brody, Brooklynn and Adalynn Hefner and Luca Norton. Jim Mesker, a brother-in-law, survives in Delphos, and his sweetheart, Jeannine Murphy of Salem, NH.

He is preceded in death by the following siblings: Raymond K. “Jack” Norton, Margaret Wilson, Anne Sherman and Mary Mesker.

Dick was a 1944 graduate of St. Rose High School, a 1951 graduate of the University of Dayton, a graduate of Central States School of Banking, Madison, WI and a World War II Navy veteran serving in the Pacific Theater. He retired as senior vice president of the Huntington Bank. He was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1275 and American Legion Post 96, all in Lima. He was a life member of the Knights of Columbus, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Fraternal Order of Eagles and a charter member of the Lima Exchange Club. He was a volunteer at St. Rita’s Medical Center, enjoyed his winters in Florida and cherished a great round of golf. He was the first president of Lima Central Catholic School Board.

The family wishes to extend their sincere gratitude to Kessler Estates for their care of him for nearly two years and to Bridge Hospice for their attention to our father in his final days.

Visitation for Dick will be Friday, June 16, 2023, from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Shawnee Chapel of Chiles-Laman Funeral & Cremation Services. His Funeral Mass will begin at 11:00 a.m., Saturday June 17, 2023, at St. Rose Catholic Church, with Fr. David Ross officiating. Burial will be in Gethsemani Cemetery following the service, with military honors by V.F.W. Post 1275 and the U.S. Navy Honor Guard.
