Richard E. Miller, 96, of Lima passed away at 2:35 PM on June 22, 2016 at St. Rita’s Medical Center.

He was born on December 8, 1919 in Lima to James H. and Milrea Ward Miller, who both preceded him in death. On June 22, 1946, he married Maxine Mankey, who survives in Lima.

Richard was self-employed carpenter/contractor and retired in 1982. He proudly served his country as a tank driver in the 2nd Armored Division in the US Army during World War II, who landed on Omaha Beach on D+1. He enjoyed fishing. After retirement, he built and sold over 1, 200 dog houses.

Surviving are his son Ronald Connie Miller of Lima; his daughter Peggy Hale of Lima; his brothers Fredrick Mary Ann Miller of Cridersville and Robert Miller of Lima; his grandchildren Melissa Houston Furgeson and Jason Amy Miller both of Chicago, IL; his great-grandchildren Lily, Eli and Sage Furgeson all of Chicago, IL.

He was preceded in death by his brothers LaVerne, Carl, Marion and William Miller; his sisters Alice Yoakam, Bessie Rodney and Ilo Whittaker; his son-in-law Farrell Hale.

The family will receive friends from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Saturday, June 25, 2016 at CHILES-LAMAN FUNERAL & CREMATION SERVICES, EASTSIDE CHAPEL.

Private interment will be in Ward Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Johnny Appleseed Metropolitan Park District or to the Veterans Food Pantry.
