Rex David Cope, age 65, passed away December 15, 2015, at 7:40 am, at his residence. Rex was born March 16, 1950 in Lima, OH, to Daniel H. and Icie I. Fickel Cope who preceded him in death. On February 24, 1978 he married Nora E. Murphy Cope who survives in Elida.
Rex was a 1969 graduate of the Lima Senior High School. After high school he joined the U.S. Army and served as a medic tech in Korea and Germany during the Vietnam War. Once he returned home from the war he took a position as a medical tech with St. Rita’s Hospital and worked there for more than 10 years. He later worked with the Brunner News Agency as a delivery person and worked there several years. The last occupation he had was working as a mechanic with Westgate Lanes Bowling Alley and worked there until he could no longer work due to his disability. Rex was a member of the Gardendale Church of God. Rex loved sports of all kinds and he will be remembered as being “a book of knowledge” when it came to sports related historical information. He was an avid Ohio State Buckeyes and Cleveland Browns fans. He also had been a little league baseball coach.
Rex is survived by a daughter, Beth R. Douglas L. Stumbaugh II Nichols of Lima, OH, a brother, Carl Cope of Lima, OH, 3 sisters; Cheryl Cope of Cridersville, OH, Mary Bartley of Findlay, OH and Danette David Hiltbrunner of Plymouth, OH, a grandson, Billy Nichols Jr., 2 granddaughters; Kyree Stumbaugh and Alycen Stumbaugh, 2 special nieces; Jennifer Cope of Lima, OH and Olivia Foster of Lima, OH and also several other nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by 2 brothers; James and Mike, 3 sisters; Thomasina, Nancy and Toni.
There will be a funeral service held on Saturday, December 19, 2015 at 3:00 pm at the CHILES-LAMAN FUNERAL AND CREMATION SERVICES, SHAWNEE CHAPEL. Officiating the service will be Rev. Terry Davy. Following the service there will be military rites performed by the U.S. Army and the VFW # 1275. Burial of cremated remains will be done privately at a later date. Friends may call from 1-3 pm on Saturday prior to the service at the SHAWNEE CHAPEL. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Rita’s Hospice. Condolences may be expressed at chiles-lamanfh.com
