Raymond P. Swenar, 74, passed away on Monday, October 25, 2021 at Lima Memorial Hospital, surrounded by loved ones.

Ray was born on July 27, 1947 in Cleveland, Ohio to Raymond P. Swenar, Sr. and Julie Swenar (nee Vertocnik). In 1966, he graduated from Solon High School, where he competed in cross-country, track & field, and football. He graduated from Ohio Northern University in 1970 with a bachelor’s degree in education, later completing a master’s degree from the University of Dayton. For 35 years, he taught history and social studies at Perry High School in Lima, Ohio. There, he coached track & field and cross-country. Beloved by his students, he is fondly remembered for his humor and lightheartedness.

In 1982, Ray married Cheryl Swenar (nee Parrish) and started a family. They remained married until Cheryl’s death in 2013. Their union resulted in two children and three grandchildren.

In 2001, Ray took a part-time job at Toys R Us, where he would become a familiar face and an invaluable team member for 17 years.

In 2005, he celebrated his retirement from teaching with a glass of bourbon – it was time for a change. Unsatisfied with idle hands, Ray continued to work at Toys R Us, delivering joy to the children of Lima, before retiring for good in 2018.

He was preceded in death by his wife Cheryl, his parents, and his brothers Michael and Louis. He is survived by his sons Ray (Blaire) Swenar and Ryan (Karen) Swenar, his sister Fran McGee, his grandchildren, Wyatt, Addison, and Oliver, his companion Virginia Hydo, and countless more family and friends.

Ray loved science-fiction, classic films, and his family. He will be greatly missed.

A public viewing will be held from 12pm to 4pm on Sunday, October 31 at CHILES – LAMAN FUNERAL AND CREMATION SERVICES, EASTSIDE CHAPEL, in Lima, OH. A funeral service will begin at 1pm on Monday November 1 at CHILES – LAMAN FUNERAL AND CREMATION SERVICES, EASTSIDE CHAPEL followed by a burial service at Memorial Park Cemetery.
