Mary Lynn Schum, age 73, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 14, 2018, at 9:45 pm, the very date of their 53rd Wedding Anniversary. Mary Lynn was born Nov. 12, 1944, in Cleveland, OH, to Fred J. and Rosenell (Sears) Chaney who preceded her in death.
While in grade school she met her husband, Gary Schum. They married in 1965 and together they had four children; Gary Patrick (Trisha) Schum, her twin daughters, Kathleen (Todd) Kise and Ann (T.J.) Leonard and Timothy (Jennifer) Schum. Grandma “Mickey” (as she was affectionately known as, because of her love for Disney and Mickey Mouse), leaves behind eight wonderful grandchildren; Alexandra and Gwen Schum, Katie and Maggie Kise, Amanda and Grace Leonard, and Andrew and Matthew Schum.
Mary Lynn graduated from Westlake High School and went to work for New York Life Insurance Company in 1962. After marrying Gary in 1965, and raising their family, her love for children prompted her to become a school crossing guard for the North Olmsted, OH Police Department. She enjoyed this job until she and Gary moved to Lima, OH in 1986. Mary Lynn loved being a wife, mother and grandmother and was known as “Mom Schum” or “Grandma Mickey” to all. She also loved flowers, gardening, dogs, (especially her Mick and Baron) and the Cleveland Indians. She loved all children and especially enjoyed sharing stories of her children and grandchildren with her friends and neighbors. She spent winters in Lake Wales, FL, where she leaves behind many good friends, both American and Canadian. Mary Lynn, loved life and always had a smile on her face. She leaves behind many fun-filled memories for all of us to forever cherish.
Mary Lynn also leaves behind her older brother, James (deceased) and Kathie Chaney, a brother in-law, William (Carolyn) Schum, a sister in-law, Nancy (Ralph) Winterich, and numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life Mass for family and friends will be held on Tuesday, August 21, 2018 at 11:00 am at the St. Rose Catholic Church. Officiating the Mass will be Fr. David Ross. Burial of cremated remains will be held privately at a later date.
Mary Lynn and her family wish to thank the hospice workers from Mercy Health-St. Rita’s Hospice as well as all her relatives and friends for providing comfort and support during the final days of her battle with lung cancer. True to Mary Lynn’s unselfish character, she urges everyone to “Stop Smoking” and hopefully enjoy a little more time on this earth…..
