Ken Douglas Basinger, formerly of Lima, Ohio who had retired to Poway, CA, passed away peacefully on December 7, 2015, at age 80. Ken was born on June 4, 1935, in Lima to Warren Douglas and Helen Johnson Basinger. He attended Lima Central High School, graduating in 1953, and then entered The Ohio State University obtaining his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration in 1957. While at Ohio State he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity serving as its chapter Secretary, was active in the Young Republicans Club and Toastmasters Club, and obtained his private pilot’s license through Ohio State’s School of Aviation.

In 1958 Ken was appointed to the State Division of Aviation staff, overseeing public relations and safety. From 1959 to 1960 he served in the U.S. Army Artillery, and then in 1961 Ken became a Registered Jeweler and joined his family owned firm, Basinger’s Jewelers – a downtown Lima landmark founded in 1893 by Ken’s grandfather which Ken later co-owned and ran with his brother Bob.

Ken was a well-known, well respected, and greatly admired and beloved civic and business leader in Lima, serving as Director of the Lima Area Chamber of Commerce, President of the Better Business Bureau, President of the American Cancer Society of Allen County, President of the Greater Lima Downtown Association, Advisory Committee Member for Lima Technical College Business School, President of Lima Exchange Service Club, Business Chair for the Allen County Mothers March of Dimes, and as a deacon at Market Street Presbyterian Church. Ken had been a member of B.P.O. Elks – Lima Lodge #54 since 1958. He also was both Treasurer and President of the Ohio Jewelers Association.

Throughout his life, Ken enjoyed water and snow skiing, home building and remodeling, flying, and extensive camping and travel with his family throughout the continental U.S., Mexico, Europe, and Australia.

Ken is survived by his wife of 55 years, Connie Carolyn Lay Basinger; children Douglas, Roger, Deborah and Susan; daughter-in-law Susan Basinger and son-in-law Dave Williford; and nine grandchildren, Matthew, Jonathan, Jacob, Anissa, Gabriel, Sofia, Dalan, Janai, and Reid. He is also survived by his brother, Robert Basinger, of Lima, and several nieces and nephews and their families. He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother William.

Family will greet friends from 2:30 to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 13, at Chiles-Laman Funeral Home, 1170 Shawnee Road, Lima, Ohio 45805, and at a second viewing on Monday, December 14 from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. with funeral service to follow at 11:30.
