John W. Thorne, Jr., 90, of Lima passed away at 8:25 PM on Saturday, August 25, 2018 at Lima Memorial Hospital.

He was born on May 15, 1928 in Port Arthur, TX to John W. and Mary (Henry) Thorne, Sr., who both preceded him in death. John was a sergeant in the US Army serving during World War II on through the Nuremberg Trials. While working as an electrical engineer for the trials, he married Evelyn Charlotte Beresford in Furth, Germany on February 28, 1948. Evelyn was a secretary to one of the prosecuting attorneys, during the Trials. Evelyn preceded him in death on August 31, 2013.

John worked in code enforcement for the City of Lima and retired in 1981. He then served as the President of the Board for Superior Federal Credit Union, during the 1990’s.

He was a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen and the Eagles Aerie 370, Lima. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and was very accomplished in archery and had won numerous awards. John was a Cleveland Browns fan and enjoyed working on puzzle books.

Surviving are his children John Wayne (Kim Grady) Thorne of St. Petersburg, FL, Linda Susan Thorne Music formerly of Lima, Gerald (Peggy Folk) Thorne of Lima, Cheryl (Larry) Thorne Dugger of Lakeview and Michael (Gwendolyn Phillips) Thorne of St. Petersburg, FL; his grandchildren Kenneth E. Music, Jr., Julie Ann Music, Laura Thorne, John J. (Meghan) Thorne, Jennifer Thorne, Jacqueline Thorne, Michael Jay (Morgan) Goetz, Melinda Sue (Dave Driscoll) Goetz, Melissa Inez Thorne and Jesse (Victoria Relyea) Thorne; Honorary grandchildren, Heather Holbrook Jackson and Holly Clifford; fourteen great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; his dog Tuffy; friend of the family Jay Jacobi.

He was preceded in death by his grandchildren Susan Lynn and Michelle Renee Music; his brother Harold; his sisters Myrtle, Janola and Maude.

The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM on Wednesday, August 29, 2018 at CHILES-LAMAN FUNERAL & CREMATION SERVICES, EASTSIDE CHAPEL, where funeral services will follow at 1:00 P.M.

Military honors will be conducted by VFW Post 1275 immediately following the funeral services at the funeral home.

Entombment will be at a later date in the Memorial Park Cemetery Mausoleum.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Marimor Industries.
