John J. Baber, age 94, passed away May 25, 2015, at 10:15 am, at his residence.

John was born May 18, 1921 in Lima, OH, to John W. and Vivian A. Dixon Baber who preceded him in death. On August 18, 1947 he married Lois L. Bastian Baber who preceded him in death on December 18, 2010.

John served in the US Army Infantry during WWII, from 1943 to 1946. He served in Japan and the Phillipines, with the 32nd Division, 26 Regiment, Company E. During the War he earned a Purple Heart and a Bronze Battle Star. John was a member of the Ohio Operating Engineers Union and worked with Tuttle Construction Co. for many years retiring in 1983. He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church. Some of John’s hobbies included gardening and woodworking. He also loved to travel with his wife Lois.

John is survived by a daughter, Beth B. Thomas Sanders of Lima, OH, 2 sisters; Oletha Henry I. Zaborniak of North Baltimore, OH and Ploma L. Charles Arnett of Lima, OH, 3 granddaughters; Rhonda Groves-McDonald, Amanda Jonathan Sanders-Keoughan, and Angela Michael Sanders-Bello, 2 grandsons; Bryan Simpson and Jacob Sanders, 7 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren and a brother in-law, Forrest Weaver of Cridersville, OH.

He was preceded in death by a son, Dale D Baber, a brother, Grover Wayne Baber, 8 sisters; LaDonna M. Weaver, Alfretta J. Emmett Weaver, Velma E. Bernard Brown, Melba “Arlene” Earl Fritz, Margery A. Walter Lange, Carolyn J. Robert Place, Magdelena Fred Kimpel and Walthea Z Helser.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 29, 2015 at 11:00 am at the CHILES-LAMAN FUNERAL AND CREMATION SERVICES, SHAWNEE CHAPEL. Officiating the service will be Rev. David Harris. Burial will be in the Shawnee Cemetery following the service.

Friends may call on Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at SHAWNEE CHAPEL. Military Honors will be provided by the U.S. Army and the VFW #1275.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Trinity UMC or Community Health Professionals Hospice.
