Irwin D. Foley, age 84, went home to be with the Lord at 12:20 pm, Wednesday, January 9, 2019 at his home in Wapakoneta with his daughter and wife at his side.
Irwin was born April 27, 1934 in Tiffin, OH to the late Dewey and Genevee (Roberts) Foley. He is preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Joyce L. (Wells) Foley, married November 14, 1954. She preceded him in death on March 24, 2006. He is also preceded in death by a brother, Gene Foley.
Irwin was a 1952 graduate of Lima South High School. He served in the Navy from 1957 through 1965 (SFM3). He worked his way up at Gasdorf Tool and Machine (Lima) through 35 years of service, where he retired as co-owner and Vice President. Irwin enjoyed many wonderful years spending time at the Jensen Beach, FL condo, which he owned for 40 years. Fishing and playing golf were his favorite pastimes, as well as travel and spending time with family and friends.
Irwin loved the Lord and was a longtime, dedicated member of the Lima First Assembly of God church. This love led him to volunteer service: camp counselor; drove the church van; softball team member; Sunday School office assistant; led Royal Rangers boy’s group; sang in the choir, maintained the buildings and many years on the board as a deacon.
Although he was known to many as a quiet man with few words to say, his family knew that he was a prankster and loved to play jokes. Some such orneriness included a tv remote zapper, remote control rat and spider, throwing water out a window on his kids and their friends outside, and much more.
He loved the older hymns and harmonizing with them. Irwin followed the Gaither’s and visited Branson several times.
Irwin is survived by his wife, Phyllis (Shoemaker) Foley, married June 21, 2008 and resides in Wapakoneta.
Irwin is also survived by his loving daughter, Kimberly “Kim” Foley of Grove City, and son, Pastor Timothy “Rusty” (Letecia “Tish”) Foley. Step-father to Deborah “Deb” (David) Hanna of Wapakoneta, and Michael “Mike” (Dena) Shoemaker of Louisville, KY. Grandfather to Rachel (Travis) Dennison and Stephen (Miranda) Foley. Step-grandfather to Joshua (Crystal) Hanna; Nick (Amber) Hanna; Danielle (Nick) Menzies; Candace (Matt) Gross; and Brian (Danielle) Shoemaker. Great grandfather to Teigan Dennison. Step-great grandfather to Wyatt Badertscher; Ella Badertscher; and Aiden Grieshop.
Irwin is also survived by his brother Raymond (Alicia) Foley of Lima, two sisters-in-law, Marilyn (Gene) Foley of Cridersville and Gerri (Guy) McDonald of Michigan, and brother-in-law Jack (Anita) Wells of Indiana. He is also survived by cousins, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will begin at 11:00 am on Monday, January 21, 2019 at Lima First Assembly of God, 1660 Findlay Road, Lima, Ohio 45801. Pastors Darrell Bucher, Jerry Hall and Timothy “Rusty” Foley will officiate the service. Entombment will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the United States Navy and the VFW #1275.
The family will receive friends from 2:00-4:00 pm and 6:00-8:00 pm Sunday, January 20 at Chiles-Laman Funeral and Cremation Services, Shawnee Chapel.
Memorial contributions may be made to Lima First Assembly of God or Home Instead Senior Care.
