Harry Austin Armstrong was born July 5, 1927 in Middle Point, Ohio, the third of Jennie Mae (Myers) Armstrong and Harry Wilson Armstrong’s nine children. He died Saturday, May 27, 2017 in Lima, Ohio.
Harry completed early schooling in Middle Point, graduating from Fort Wayne, Indiana’s Central High. A United States Navy Veteran, Harry received an honorable discharge following service during World War II. He began his professional studies at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, and earned a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Indiana Technical College in Fort Wayne.
Mr. Armstrong started his professional career as a structural engineer for North American Aviation in Columbus, Ohio, later working for Dresser-Ideco, Columbus. He took a position with McLaughlin & Keil Architects in Lima, Ohio in 1955. In 1962, Tom Bowman and Mr. Armstrong formed Bowman & Armstrong, an Architecture and Engineering Partnership. They later incorporated CM Limited, a Construction Management firm with operations in Lima and Battle Creek, Michigan. Mr. Armstrong held structural engineering licenses in Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Utah. Harry’s design and construction expertise focused on schools, churches and office structures. Retirement found him actively consulting on architectural and engineering projects through 2015.
Mr. Armstrong remained active in Lima’s professional, public, and private community for more than 60 years. History interested Harry. He studied books, maps and enjoyed extensive travels, golf, fishing and friends.
Mr. Armstrong is survived by his wife, Lois Ann (Hecht) Armstrong, Lima; children: Steven (Debbie) Armstrong, Syracuse, Utah, Richard (Barbara) Armstrong, Syracuse, Utah, Christine (Jim) Gardner, Blackfoot, Idaho; their mother, Lois Reighter, Fort Wayne, Indiana; step children: Michael Hecht, Vail, Colorado, Michelle (Ed) Boyer, Lima, Rob Hecht, Austin, Texas; grandchildren: Matthew, Jacob, Megan, Austin, Sally, Jennie, Emily, Claire and Flint; step-grandchildren; Nicole, Peter, Gabrielle; and numerous great-grandchildren; brothers; Dean (Janeen) Armstrong, Fort Wayne, Indiana, Dr. Norman (Georgia) Armstrong, Bradenton, Florida, Dr. Ron (Carol) Armstrong, Lakewood Ranch, Florida; sister-in-law; Carmen Armstrong, Tucson, Arizona.
Harry was preceded in death by his parents; siblings: Merritt, Robert, Nolan, Earnest, Martha Ann; and step-grandson, Andrew.
Private Entombment in Woodlawn Cemetery’s Historic 1912 Mausoleum by Chiles – Laman, Lima.
