LIMA – Gerald “Jerry” Eugene Bean, 79, passed away on Monday, April 16, 2018 following complications from pneumonia at Kindred Hospital in Lima, Ohio.

Jerry was born October 31, 1938 in Leipsic, Ohio to the late Victor H. Bean, Jr. and Lois B. (Stout) Bean. He graduated from Leipsic High School, Class of 1956 and the International Business College, Fort Wayne, IN. On February 14, 1959, he married Rebecca “Becky” L. Benton, who survives in Elida.

Jerry grew up during the age of expanding automobile design and invention. His father, Victor, owned one of the early Hudson dealerships where Jerry developed his love of Hudson cars, history and mechanical know-how. He worked most of his life in car-related industries as an oil distributor and salesman, former owner of E.Z. Wheeler Truck Caps and Accessories, and for the last 12 years as the coordinator of vehicle retrieval drivers for the Tom Ahl Dealerships in Lima, Ohio. Driving was what he loved best and he’ll be remembered for his amazing internal GPS that long preceded current day gadgets.

His love for the road resulted in many memorable family trips traveling in the Midwest and the Smokie Mountains. In retirement, he and Becky continued their travels including a cruise to Alaska and a much enjoyed Colorado trip with their grandkids.

Jerry owned vintage Hudson and Terraplane cars and enjoyed connecting with friends at car meets. Most recently he enjoyed driving his red 1954 Hudson Hornet Club Coupe to the weekly Cruise-in at the Elida Road Happy Daz. He was a long time member of the Hudson-Essex-Terraplane Club, serving many years as a Chapter Newsletter Editor. He attended St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Elida and was known for his coffee-making during church dinners.

Jerry is survived by his daughter, Cheryl (Marty) Heator of Ypsilanti, MI; his son, Dave Bean of Elida; and granddaughters, Megan Heator of Traverse City, MI and Olivia Heator of Ypsilanti, MI.

A gathering of family and friends will be held from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Friday, April 20, 2018 at CHILES-LAMAN FUNERAL AND CREMATION SERVICES, SHAWNEE CHAPEL. Burial will take place at Whiteford Union Cemetery in Lambertville, MI at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 105 E. Main St., Elida, OH 45807 or the National Hudson Motor Car Co. Museum, 100 E. Cross St., Ypsilanti, MI 48198.
