Gene M. Amspaugh, age 93 of Lima, passed away at 8:51 p.m., Sunday, April 30, 2023 at Springview Manor.

Gene was born April 2, 1930 in Lima, to Russell and Lottie (Stoner) Amspaugh who preceded him in death. On February 27, 1953, he married Patricia L. Eley who preceded him in death on January 18, 2010.

Surviving are his daughters: Fawn (Steve) Counts and Kelly (Daniel) Endicott both of Lima; grandchildren: Stacey (Paul) Raspitzi, Brady (Tina) Counts, Darcey (Mike) Reilly, Abbey Endicott and Casey (Kelley) Counts; great-grandchildren: Taylor Counts, Lauren Counts, Caden Counts, Ava Raspitzi, Lincoln Counts, Cooper Counts, William Reilly, Olivia Raspitzi and Eleanor Reilly.

He was also preceded in death by his three brothers.

Mr. Amspaugh was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a retired Captain from Lima Fire Department after 30 years, where he was Firefighter of the Year in 1972 and 1973. He was also the first paramedic in Lima and #59 in Ohio. He had been a councilor for the City of Lima, from 1986-1989. Prior to his retirement, he began working at St. Rita’s Hospital where he was employed for over 45 years. He was also a St. Rita’s Legend in 1994. He was a member of V.F.W. Post 1275 and American Legion Post 96, F.O.E Aerie #370, Orioles Nest 173. In 2018, he was able to go to Washington D.C. with Honor Flight. Gene loved spending time in his yard and taking care of his many flower beds. When he wasn’t in his yard, you could often find him out in the garage fixing things or down at the local watering hole with his fellow Veterans. He had a soft spot in his heart for his beloved dogs and all four-legged friends. Through his life accomplishments, and 93 years, he touched more people than we will ever know. Gene will be sadly missed.

Services will begin at 11:00 a.m., on Thursday, May 4, 2023 at the Shawnee Chapel of Chiles-Laman Funeral & Cremation Services, with Rev. David Ross to officiate the service. Entombment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery Mausoleum following the service where military rites will be conducted by V.F.W. Post 1275 and the U.S. Navy Honor Guard. Visitation will be on Wednesday, from 6-8 p.m. where the Lima Fire Department will stand Honor Guard and have a memorial service at 8:00 p.m. in the funeral home. Visitation will also be one hour prior to the service on Thursday.
