Dr. John L. Carroll, Jr. of Estero, FL, formerly of Lima, OH, passed away on December 12, 2015 at 6:22pm at Gulf Coast Medical Center in Ft. Myers, FL.

He was born July 29, 1936 in Sandusky, OH to Dr. John L. Carroll, Sr. and Esther Riesterer Carroll, who preceded him in death. On October 15, 1983 he was married to Beverly Carroll née Mericle who survives in Estero, FL.

Other survivors include three children: John L. “Josh” Kimberly Carroll, III of Batavia, OH; Christopher Robin Carroll of Western Springs, IL; and Leslie Jochen Bachmann of Chicago, IL. Stepchildren: Sandra Glen Lause of Naples, FL and Paula Winkler of Naples, FL. He was the grandfather, “Papa Doc,” of Jack, Matthew, Patrick and Peter Carroll of Batavia, OH; Holden and Harper Carroll of Western Springs, IL; Abigail and Sophie Bachmann of Chicago, IL; Josh Winkler of Lima; Lauren Winkler of E. Falmouth, MA; and great-grandfather of Hayden and Haylee Winkler of Lima, OH.

He is also survived by two brothers: James MaryAnne Carroll of Chesterland, OH and Dr. Richard Debbie Carroll of Centerville, OH; a sister, Rita Thompson of Kettering, OH; a sister-in-law, Karen Carroll of Sandusky, OH; and numerous nieces, nephews, loved ones and friends. He was preceded in death by his stepdaughter, Diana Johnson and her husband, Daniel; his brother, Dr. Thomas Carroll; sister, Margaret Snyder; brother-in-law, Larry Thompson; and niece, Cherie Thompson.

Dr. Carroll was a graduate of St. Mary Catholic High School in Sandusky, OH; John Carroll University in Cleveland, OH; and a 1962 graduate of Loyola University, Stritch School of Medicine in Chicago, IL. He did his residency in neurosurgery at The University of Illinois-Chicago Medical Center in Chicago, IL. He actively served his Country as a Captain in the U.S. Air Force. He was a practicing neurosurgeon in Lima, OH from 1969 until his retirement in 1995 from the practice he founded and owned, Neurosurgical Associates of Lima, Inc. For several years during his career he was Chief of Neurosurgery at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima and he was a member of the American Medical Association.

Dr. Carroll was a proud Catholic and strong in his faith. He was a member of Our Lady of Light Catholic Community in Estero, FL and maintained close ties with St. Rose/St. John Catholic Parishes in Lima. He was an active member of Estero Country Club at the Vines in Florida, and a long-time previous member of Shawnee Country Club in Lima. He was a truly original, generous, loyal and loving man with a larger than life personality, an infectious laugh, and was always quick with a joke. He enjoyed playing cards, talking politics, watching sports, and most of all, his family.

He was a devoted husband, father, stepfather, father-in-law, grandfather, brother, son, uncle and physician who was respected by many and a friend to all.

John would want his friends and loved ones to celebrate the Christmas season uninterrupted and therefore we will be memorializing his life after the New Year holiday.

Family will greet visitors from 2PM – 4PM, and 6PM – 8PM on Sunday, January 10, 2016 at CHILES-LAMAN FUNERAL & CREMATION SERVICES SHAWNEE CHAPEL, 1170 Shawnee Road, Lima, OH 45805.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11AM on Monday, January 11, 2016 at St. Rose Catholic Church, W Street. & McKibben Street, Lima, OH 45801.

Interment will immediately follow at Walnut Grove Cemetery in Delphos, OH.

An additional memorial service and celebration of Dr. Carroll’s life will be held in Florida this winter, the details of which are pending and will be announced at a later date.
