David C. “Dave” Smith, age 83, was called to his Heavenly Home at 4:10 p.m. Friday, January 21, 2022, at Van Crest of Delphos surrounded by his family.

David was born October 17, 1938 in Sedalia, MO, to the late Charles and Eldora A. (Humphreys) Smith. On December 30, 1960 he married Jeanne (Tribolet) Smith.

David was a 1956 graduate of Gomer High School. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Science and Education from the University of Miami in 1960. He later obtained his Master’s degree in 1967 from Indiana University in Guidance. David began his teaching career in the Middletown City Schools and returned home to Elida High School as a Biology Teacher and later became a Guidance Counselor. He was a dedicated member of the Allen County and Elida community for many years. Upon his retirement he was elected to the Elida and Apollo Career Center School Boards, having served for 12 years. He then served on the Allen County Board of Education and also served as President of the Northwest Ohio School Board Association during that time. He loved his Elida Bulldogs and served as basketball scorebook keeper in the Elida Fieldhouse for 33 years. In 2004 he was elected into the Elida School Hall of Fame. David also served as a member of several service clubs in the area. He was a member of the Allen County Fair Board for 24 years, was a lifetime member of the Allen County and Ohio Retired Teachers and had been a recipient of the Jefferson Award. David was a longtime member of Immanuel United Methodist Church. Above all, David was a proud husband, dad, grandpa and great grandpa who dearly loved spending time with his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jeanne E. Smith of Elida; 2 children, Laura Smith of Lima and Steve (Julie) Smith of Elida; 4 grandchildren, Alex (Ryan) Dunham of Fort Myers, FL, Ashley (Casey) Reed of Lima, Chad Smith of Elida and Carly (Trent) Long of Elida; 5 great-grandchildren, Rowan Dunham, Edeline Dunham, Ezrah Dunham, Marlee Long and Baby Reed on the way; brother, Lowell (Carol) Smith of Hicksville; sister-in-law, Shelbyan Tribolet of Middlepoint and many special nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth (Wanda) Smith; in-laws, Lawrence and Ruth Tribolet and brother-in-law, Larry Tribolet.

Funeral services will begin at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 29, 2022, at Immanuel United Methodist Church, 699 Sunnydale, Elida, OH 45807. Pastor Randy Coleman will officiate the service. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery, Elida.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, January 28, at CHILES – LAMAN FUNERAL AND CREMATION SERVICES, SHAWNEE CHAPEL and from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Saturday, prior to the service at the church.
