Carl J.C. Wolf died on May 11, 2018 at the age of 99. Carl was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts on February 16, 1919 to Otto A. and Helen Hilbert Wolf. He is predeceased by his wife, Claralice and by his sister Arvola.
Carl graduated from Lawrence High School, Lawrence, Massachusetts, in 1936, Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois, 1940, and Princeton Theological Seminary, Princeton, New Jersey, in 1943. He received an honorary Doctor of Divinity from Davis and Elkins College, West Virginia, in 1956.
While at Wheaton, Carl met and fell for Claralice Hanna of Lampang Thailand. They were married in August 1943 and embarked on a life devoted to church and family. Carl’s first pastorate was in New Bedford, Massachusetts. After that he spent ten years as the Director of the West Virginia Mountain Project – a mission including multiple churches and a significant social ministry. He became Associate Executive of the Synod of New Jersey and then the pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Cranbury, New Jersey. From there he and Claralice moved back to missions, as Director of the Buckhorn Children’s Center in Kentucky. They then came to Findlay, Ohio, where Carl was pastor of a church and an Associate Executive of the Maumee Valley Presbytery. In all these pastorates, Carl was dedicated to the church community and to his Christian mission. Following years of active retirement, Carl and Claralice were among the first residents of the newly opened Maple Crest retirement home in Bluffton, where a whole new circle of friendships was formed.
Carl is survived by daughters Rosemary Proctor of Toronto and Karen Wolf of Hartford, by son Eric Wolf of Santa Fe, New Mexico, by grandchildren Allison Proctor (Andrew Norrie) and Sam Wolf (Mary Wolf) and by great grandchildren Jackson, Sydney and Daniel.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, May 15th at 10:30 a.m.at the Bluffton Presbyterian Church, with reception to follow.
