Bessie Louise Oatman, 96, passed away peacefully Monday, August 20, 2018, at Mennonite Memorial Home, Bluffton, where she was a resident since February 7.
Born on October 21, 1921 in Wetmore, KS, she was the daughter of Carl C. Board and Geneva Charlotte Newlin. She never knew her parents, but was adopted, as an infant, by Frank Lawrence Geary and Blanche Edith Magill of Seneca, KS, who proceeded her in death.
Bess, as she preferred to be called, graduated from Seneca High School, class of 1939. On September 12, 1939, she married her school classmate, Lester Herbert Oatman in Decatur, IN. They were married for 42 years, until Lester died October 10, 1981.
Before moving to Bluffton, Bess had lived in Lima, Seneca, KS; Uniopolis, Rushmore, Belle Center and Lakeview.
During World War II, she was a secretary at the Lima Ordinance Depot, and later was a secretary at Neon Products, Westinghouse, Gro Cord, all of Lima, and Agrico Plant, in Cairo.
She served as secretary of Bath High Schools PTA, and a charter member of Bath Townships Fire Dept. Ladies Auxiliary, serving as President, the Seneca High School Alumni Association and Pleasant View Church of the Brethren since 1952, Indian Lake Aerie 3615 Fraternal Order of the Eagles and Indian Lake Lodge 1533 Loyal Order of Moose.
Bess was a Girl Scout leader of Troop 416, and received public service award from The Ford Motor Company, Lima Engine Plant. She also was a volunteer at Lima Memorial Health System, with more than 1,000 hours of service.
She loved people, cats, birds, flowers, good humor, music, dancing, knitting and crocheting. She enjoyed learning new interesting things, solving extremely difficult crossword puzzles, which she did in ink, and was a devoted reader of The Lima News.
In the 1980’s, she was an avid walker, which she received numerous awards.
Bess enjoyed the Cincinnati Reds, scoring the games at home, or games at Riverfront, including the World Series, and attended the Hall of Fame induction in 1990 at Cooperstown, NY.
She also enjoyed her friends from her hometown of Seneca, KS, those from church, Bath Township, Lima and Indian Lake, especially from the Tilton Hilton, Eagles and Moose.
Survivors include her son, Larry, daughter, Barbara (Oatman) (Bill) Reeder, both of Lima, 3 grandsons, John Armstrong of Nashport, OH, Christopher (Amanda) Armstrong of Indianapolis, IN, Lane (Carla) Oatman of Middletown, OH, a granddaughter, Alison (Bernard) Kwiatkowski of Pittsburgh, PA; and 4 great-grandchildren. A son, David Lane, and a half-sister, Doris (Newlin) Brenner, preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 24, at 10:00 AM at Chiles-Laman Funeral Home – Bluffton, Bill Herr officiating, with burial in Memorial Park Cemetery, Lima, following the service.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, Aug. 23, from 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM and one hour prior to the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Girl Scouts or Lima Memorial Health System.
